Farm Song 2015

A song I made up over the course of the season at Turner Farm. One of the things I like best about farming is that often your body is busy but your mind is free to go wherever it wants. So I figured, to keep this blog from being too boring, I can throw in some musings-from-the-field every now and then. This song I made up because I wanted something simple and rhythmic to sing while hoeing my tomato field, which ended up getting COMPLETELY overgrown with weeds anyway. Sigh. See the last verse of the song lol. Still got a ton of awesome tomatoes though (literally. several tons over the course of the season, in fact) so no complaints here, alhamdulillah.

Every summer fades to autumn, every death precedes a birth
Unresisting, unrelenting, sacred cycles of the earth
How we fear the only stranger each of us is sure to meet
Every heartbeat brings him closer; life is short and bittersweet
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Mumeet
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Mumeet.

It may be your destiny to taste a few forbidden fruits
Til you let your hands get dirty you will never find your roots
You were made from earth and water, your ancestors weren’t so pure
In the mercy of your maker, sinful spirit, feel secure.
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Ghafoor
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Ghafoor

Aching back and blistered fingers, pause a moment from your toil
Friendly breezes cool your eyelids, fragrance rises from the soil
Drifting shade and sighing grasses, sweet embraces of the land
What a blessing feeling I’m content exactly where I am
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanas-Salaam
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanas-Salaam

Hot and still and strangely silent, suddenly the sky turns black
From the eerie cold horizon, thunder rolls and lightning cracks
Wind comes whipping through the forest, tearing branches from the trees
In the tumult I can almost hear a voice commanding “Be!”
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Qawiyy
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Qawiyy

Empty handed, heavy hearted, weary footed, swollen eyed
Innocence betrayed and wasted, shattered hopes and wounded pride
On the rooftop rain is falling, let yourself dissolve in dreams
When you wake you’ll find your burdens aren’t as heavy as they seemed.
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanar-Raheem
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanar-Raheem

Oh if I could count the secrets curled within a single seed
Oh if I could speak the language of the insects and the weeds
Oh the secrets of the forest, every raindrop, every leaf
Oh the secrets of the spirit; fear, compassion, wonder, grief
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal-Lateef
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal-Lateef

You can spend a thousand seasons fighting with the sun and rain
Swim against the current until nothing but your bones remains
Try to calm a surging ocean try to stop a falling star
Try to make someone you love be anything but what they are
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Qahhar
Ya Allah Ya Rabbana, Ya Rabbanal Qahhar
