CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It’s a mutually beneficial system that gives farmers a reliable source of income early in the season, and gives customers discounted prices on fresh, seasonal produce, as well as the opportunity to be part of the farm community. The basic idea is that you pay for your produce in advance, and get a 10 to 15% discount on all the produce you get throughout the season.
FYI, you don’t have to commit to a CSA share to get our produce–you also have the option to use our online produce order form to order on a week by week basis for farm or market pickup! You don’t get the CSA discount, but you have the freedom to choose exactly what you want every week and pay as you go instead of up front.
At Green Zameen Farm, we pay attention to which of our veggies are the most popular at markets, and we’ve tailored our CSA to reflect those preferences. Our shares will be heavy on salad greens, herbs, and the kind of veggies that are actually fruits (tomatoes, peppers, etc) and light on brassicas (kale, cabbage, etc) and other large leafy greens, which, though beloved by some, are not universally popular. We also give all prospective CSA members a list of our projected crops for the season when they order, so you can let us know in advance if there are any you prefer not to get in your share, or that you want extra of if we have a bumper crop.
